WORKING TITLE: Senior Mechanical Designer
DEPARTMENT: Engineered Drives, Low Voltage Drives 
LOCATION: Wauwatosa, WI

JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE: Under the direction of the Product Engineering, Group Leader, the Senior Mechanical Designer prepares, in close association with the responsible design engineering department, work scope definition, design layout and detailed designs & drawings to satisfy requirements and conditions of the assigned project. The Senior Mechanical Designer assists internal customers in designing related functions and provides leadership and direction to less experienced staff, in accordance with company policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Under general guidance, perform various duties requiring the exercise of judgment and application of standard design principles and practices. Generate detailed mechanical and electro-mechanical design solutions and drawings for electrical systems and products. In depth knowledge of standard practices, precedents and reference sources to accomplish design intent.

Design sheet metal and/or plastic enclosures for Low Voltage (LV) enclosed drives in accordance with the product/customer requirements. 

Perform mathematical calculations, prepare sketches, drawings and reference notes to support final drawings. Requires thorough knowledge of drafting and related practices to develop designs, drawings and layouts, ensure quality of complex designs and compliance with customer requirements. 

Prepare specifications, BOM (bills of material) and related documents in accordance with requirements, establish formats and general instructions. Review and analyze a variety of engineering data, documents and reports.

Review drawings of suppliers and supporting CAD personnel for conformance to customer specifications, approved practices, and standards and codes governing specific requirements of the product/project. 

Maintain product documentation and automation databases for products, ensuring the completion and maintenance of all required documentation, paperwork, records, etc.

Plan, conduct or coordinate engineering analyses and tests, and prepare related reports and summaries, for review.

Participate in the investigation of technical problems and the establishment of procedures and corrective actions to avoid recurrences.

Other duties will include
• Maintain technical competency and remain current in changes in the industry.
• Follow and comply with all safety and work rules and regulations.
• Practice strict compliance with all safety rules whenever working on energized electrical equipment and help enforce such safety standards with others who may be involved in work on such energized equipment.
• Maintain departmental housekeeping standards.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING REQUIRED: Requires the use of the appropriate ESD equipment when in the manufacturing areas, and customer required safety equipment and clothing when traveling.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Requires an Associate’s Degree in engineering or related field plus 5 to 9 years of experience, or a special combination of education and experience and/or demonstrated accomplishments.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, product specifications, component datasheets, standards, schematics, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of geometry, algebra and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Requires a valid driver’s license.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Requires the ability to operate a variety of standard business machines, such as a computer and keyboard, calculator, telephone, photocopier, FAX, etc.
